Asphalt milling (or cold planing) is a versatile paving method that transforms the look and condition of pavement and parking lots without extensive reconstruction and with less facility downtime. Cassidy Paving is prequalified thru MassDOT for milling projects on industrial sites, commercial lots, and government properties.
What Is Milling?
Here’s what happens during the milling process:
- Our milling machine carefully removes the top layer of deteriorated asphalt, leaving behind a grooved surface, thus improving the profile of the existing pavement.
- The removed asphalt is recycled into an aggregate material (called millings), which can be reused on other projects as an alternative base material.
- The milled surface provides a solid foundation over which a new asphalt layer can be installed.
When Is Milling a Good Choice for Your Lot?
Milling is used for a variety of paving repairs and projects, including:
- Removing sags and depressions
- Removing surface damage
- Patching parking lots and prepping them for paving
- Repairing roadways sections where utility work has recently been completed
- Creating rumble strips for traffic and roadway safety
Does Milling Save Money?
When making repairs or improvements over a large area, milling is a cost-effective solution to extend the life your pavement, without the operational disruptions and costs typically experienced with more extensive pavement rehabilitation methods. You’re able to remove damaged asphalt without going all the way down to the subgrade. Your new asphalt layer will last, and your paving project will be less disruptive to your facility operations.
