Commercial and residential properties aren’t the only ones that need access to hazard-free asphalt pavement. Schools have a very essential need to provide surfaces that are free of cracks and unlevel areas. Cassidy Paving has extensive experience in providing asphalt pavement services to schools and universities. Our team follows the most rigid of safety and quality standards to ensure that your school doesn’t have a liability on its hands with faulty pavement.
Cracks and Uneven Surfaces
One of the biggest hazards on your school campus can be cracks and uneven surfaces on areas where students frequently walk. Cracks are the most common type of distress that asphalt can get. Asphalt Magazine notes that cracks happen for a couple of reasons: load-related or temperature and environmental attributions. These cracks, as defined by the magazine, can appear as one of the following:
- Fatigue- caused by load-bearing and results in a weakened base or sub base
- Block- large area coverage typically caused by shrinkage of asphalt due to temperature
- Edge- literally along the edge of the asphalt, caused by lack of pavement support
- Longitudinal- occurs in the centerline of the pavement often from poor workmanship
- Transverse- perpendicular to the centerline of the pavement and is caused by shrinkage and not load-bearing
- Reflection- near the joints and caused by old pavement movement
- Slippage- crescent-shaped cracks due to driving and braking
These are all hazards that can appear singularly or all at once (in a worst-case scenario) and should be addressed by your school as soon as possible to alleviate the probability of hazards for students, faculty, and visitors.
Where We Pave
When you think of school pavement, you typically only think of the parking lots surrounding the buildings. Pavement is so much more and can be used on the basketball courts, walkways, running tracks and even tennis courts. Other than visually appealing pavement, we understand the importance of ADA-compliant walkways on your campus. According to the United States Access Board, asphalt is one of the most compliant surfaces that can be installed on a property. Asphalt materials are recommended because they are sufficiently firm and stable for accessibility. You should be mindful of those individuals that require the best of ADA compliance to attend and visit your campus. The curbs, ramps, sidewalks, and steps should all flow seamlessly. Even small differentials in elevation on any of these surfaces can present major issues and hazards for your school. The team at Cassidy Paving wants to do everything we can to keep your students safe from tripping, falling, and any other accidents that can occur from improperly installed or maintained asphalt.
