As asphalt pavement contractors, we get a lot of the same questions from our curious customers. The team at Cassidy Paving understands that the paving process is not usually something that seems clear for everyone. We want to help clear up any misconceptions in order to prepare you for your industrial, commercial, or residential paving project. Here are some of the most common questions we receive and the straightforward answers you are looking for.
- Is asphalt a better option than concrete?
There are many amazing benefits that asphalt has that concrete simply cannot compete with. If staying on budget has a lot of sway with your decision, you will find that asphalt paving is the most cost-efficient choice. You can get asphalt for around $2-$5 per square foot while comparatively, the same amount of concrete will run you between $3 and $10. Asphalt also is much easier to repair than concrete and less expensive to do so. The wait time for driving on your asphalt lot is much shorter after the fact than concrete will be and it is just as durable.

- How long will asphalt pavement last?
A well-maintained asphalt driveway or parking lot can last well over 20 years. This may be surprising to some because one thing synonymous with pavement is potholes. With proper care, your asphalt does not have to fall victim to this most common type of deterioration. The Cassidy Paving team recommends yearly inspection so that you do get the maximum amount of years out of your asphalt. Preventative maintenance is the key.
- What causes potholes?
Potholes are common enough that we have all run over a time or two. You probably know enough to want to avoid them. Avoiding them though is a matter of determining how they form and what to do to avoid them. The National Asphalt Pavement Association says that potholes occur when water infiltrates the surface of the road, weakening the material and lessening its ability to carry the weight of vehicles. The way to avoid them is by keeping the water from infiltrating the surface in the first place. As most of us in the Northeast understand, rain is an unavoidable factor, especially during the spring months. Sealcoating is the best defense you have against potholes and the Cassidy Paving team is here to help you.
- What is sealcoating?
If you speak to an asphalt contractor you’ll most likely hear the word “sealcoating”. It is much like it sounds: a sealant for your asphalt made out of a mixture of coal tar emulsion applied to the top layer of your pavement to protect it from water infiltration. As far as application, sealcoating will be applied after the asphalt is compacted and should be reapplied every two years or so. The expert contractors at Cassidy Paving can inspect your pavement to give you the correct timeline of applying sealcoating.
- How do I care for my asphalt paving?
Just like any other part of your home or business, cleaning your asphalt pavement is just as important. Outside of your yearly maintenance, keeping the dirt and grime off of your asphalt surface can help extend its life. Spraying down the driveway or parking lot and sweeping it periodically can do wonders for keeping up the care and extending its lifespan.
